After a day with very, very little to show for it, I can at least point to the header for my journal. Triumph! I've never known how people insert headers, but with some explanation from essene and improved FAQ aids on LJ, I figured it out with only a little bit of trial and error. woot! This particular header may get shifted to stop_plagiarism, as we've been looking to do something and a picture of the British Museum Reading Room seems fitting.
Perhaps now it is time to pull all the shades and color my hair.

That Five Fic Thing that's going around
Public
Tagged by helygen:
Sometimes it's ok to pimp yourself out. Post a list of your top five fic-favorites you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.
Glass Slipper. (BtVS) The first Buffy/Angel story I ever wrote. They are my OTP liek whoa. I used to have a lot of anxiety about reading B/A fic out of a concern that the writer wouldn't do them justice. Triple that anxiety when I became the writer.
Serendipity. (BtVS) I love this story in part because it's the child that doesn't quite fit. Spike is the sympathetic narrator of the story - one written for the Buffy/Angel event, the iwry_marathon. It's told in second person, present tense, which is amusing because I'm perfectly happy telling 90% of my stories in a third person, past tense. But I can't imagine telling this story any other way.
A Bamboo Joint Cannot Be Cut (The Rootless Remix). (Firefly) This was a Cyrano style love letter to sunnyd_lite. I received her name in this year's remixredux08, which was one of those wild oddities. Of all the people involved in the Remix that I didn't know, I had her name - someone I chat with frequently and we beta for one another. But yet I managed to keep my identity a surprise until the reveal. Besides all of that, it's the first story I've written where I really expanded the 'verse, adding all sorts of original content.
Thank Heavens for Little Girls. (BtVS) To start with I loved it because it is possibility the creepiest thing I've written. And since there it has spawned a collection of stories in that verse and there's so much more still in my head and in notes for a larger, plottier story.
Never Been Kissed. (Veronica Mars) It's girl kissage. When people think femslash, they don't think of me. I love confounding people's expectations.
Tagging the following five: sunnyd_lite, soundingsea, married_n_mich, mommanerd, and garnigal.

You've voted, haven't you????
Public
I had a morning meeting, so I went out to vote about 1:30 pm, which was great timing. Basically no line at all. Given it was my first time voting at this poling place in a whole new state, even though I'd gotten my verification postcard, I made sure I had my Driver's License, a copy of a bank statement (which also had my new address), and the postcard telling my polling place. None of which I ended up needing. My name was in the book. \o/
I've had a headache on and off today, but I'm hoping to feel well enough to give going to the election party for those who have been helping with the campaign. More or less I'll know no one, but it's one of those nights where rubbing elbows will like-minded folks is appealing.
ETA: I nearly forgot! This is the most amazing pic spam. Just picture after picture that just warms my heart. I lurve Obama.

For your grandson, Toot, I'll walk around strange neighborhoods in the dark.
Public
I went back to the local HQ to do a 4 - 8 pm "Get out the Vote" shift. Mainly I've been doing phone calling (this was my third time at the office) as I've been reluctant to go door knocking. I've done door knocking in the past and have no problem with it in theory, but with the move to a smaller community and being new at my job where the people are a mix of political beliefs, I really haven't wanted to have the first time I'm on their doorstep being when I'm campaigning - and they're for the other guy.
But about 6ish I was asked to switch to helping with door hangers, which is a door to door thing, but you just leave the hanger, there's no knocking and talking. So, sure. So off I went with maps and hangers. After I parked, I realized I didn't have a buddy like I'd had when I did this in the cities and it was dark. But it was only 6:30 pm, even if dark in a very benign neighborhood in a pretty benign community. Plus I had a honking bright flashlight in my trunk and living in Alaska completely cured my wiggins of the dark. I am made of emergency plan win.
It took me about 1 1/2 hours to walk and hang my door tags with the specific info on where to vote and the poll hours. Boy howdy, could I tell I haven't done anything physical/exercisy in over three weeks. Talk about pounding the pavement - and I even had the right shoes for it.
And I have the wherewithal to ask if there was a election night gathering for volunteers. And there is,it's relatively nearby, and I'm so hopeful that this year won't be like the last two elections.
If you haven't already done so, remember to vote tomorrow!

Fic: In Sunshine or In Shadow
Public
I know that the majority of my flist aren't exactly about the B/A OTP, so I'm starting this with a "But wait! There's more!" This is a plotty little romp down the season 3 memory lane, complete with many of the faves. In order of appearance there's: Xander, Willow, Buffy, Angel, Cordelia (at a distance), Snyder, an OC, Faith, Wesley, Oz, and Giles. A perfect distraction from election angst.
Author: spiralleds Title: In Sunshine or In Shadow Setting: Following Enemies, Season 3. Rating: PG13 Word Count: ~14,000 Written for: The 2008 iwry_marathon A/N: In addition to being an IWRY story, this also incorporates a prompt from the It's the Writers, Stupid Ficathon. That prompt is at the end. Thank you to my betas, married_n_mich, mommanerd, and sunnyd_lite. They literally were doing their magic at the 11th hour. All errors are my own. All characters belong to Joss. Summary: The pipes, the pipes are calling/ From glen to glen, and down the mountain side/ The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying/ 'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.

BtVS question
Public
So how much did Snyder know about the demons and dark forces in Sunnydale? I have this vague memory that right toward the end we at least get hints that he's known it's not 'PCP'. Heck, it might even be in School Hard that we learn are given that impression.
Opinions?

Particularly for my non-US flisties (though its not exclusively non-US), a fun sight to cast your 'vote' for US president: If the World Could Vote.
I find it interesting just to see the countries where there's one person who has found the site and voted.

Dialing the phone iz tiring.
Public
I spent the late afternoon/early evening doing phone calling for the local Obama office. It was relatively enjoyable, given that there's really no one who is eager for a stranger to call them about political things. All the call was about was asking about up to three races and who they were voting for. Lots of folks wouldn't even let me get that far. I felt perky enough when I left after about 3 1/2 hours, but whoa. Now I'm tired and unfocused.
So as a counter measure, I will endeavor to lift my mood by sharing some of the amusing antidotes.
( Possibly amusing antidotes. )

WRITERCON 2009 Writing Between the Lines July 30 – August 2, 2009 Radisson Plaza Hotel Minneapolis, MinnesotaIt’s official!!!! Writercon 2009: Writing Between the Lines will take place July 30 through August 2 in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, at the Radisson Plaza Hotel. Those of you who were with me at writercon in 2004 or 2006 know this much-anticipated event is an assembly of writers and readers of fan fiction who gather to celebrate the power of telling stories. There are panel discussions, guest speakers, and hands-on workshops. Best of all, there is us! For those who are new, Writercon is an organization of fanfiction writers and readers, created by fanfiction writers and readers. We come from dozens of fandoms and write in every genre. During Writercon, we gather to discuss the art and craft of fan fiction. Some of us want to learn how to write more and better fan fiction. Others look forward to meeting up with fellow writers and readers to exchange ideas and offer support. All of us, those who have participated in numerous fandoms and those who were only recently drawn into the world of fanfiction, are welcome. So go now to writercon or to the newly launched Writercon 2009 for more information. Tickets go on sale October 30! This year I'm the Chair of Volunteers, so when you register, sign up to volunteer! Thank you! I can’t wait to see you in Minneapolis.

You can tell a person's character by the things they do when no one is looking.
Public
So in this post in barackobama2008 link to a Daily Kos article here, which links to the original article in the NG Nett, a Norwegian paper. And from what I recall of my Norwegian language lessons, the Google translation seems reasonably accurate (if a little babble-fishy in places) if you aren't comfortable with the Daily Kos as a source.
It's a great, feel good story about the kindness of a stranger named Barack Obama who is now running for president.
